A Story By Olga Bugayev
When I was a young girl and lived with my parents I was never allowed to have even a cat, not to mention a dog! The explanation was that the home cannot become anti-sanitary, filled with fur, dust, and microbes.
So the first thing I did when I left my parents house was taking a cat! Since then cats become my lifetime companions. Only the cats, I never thought about adopting a dog, thinking that an apartment is not suitable for a dog.
Now I wouldn’t even remember what made me at the certain moment go to a shelter and take a puppy. Not of a particular breed, mixed with pincher, just someone who needed a home.
I was content with my life, everything was going well. And all of a sudden I felt that I have to save someone’s life. It may sound overdramatic, but that’s how it was. My life changed irreversibly from that moment on. I still can’t understand how I lived without a dog for 56 years. My Mikkey, my most faithful friend, my baby!
In order for him not to get bored when I am at work, a kitten was adopted from a shelter. They grew up together since the old cat, who came with me from Ukraine was too old to join their games.
It was then when I saw so many cats and dogs in the shelter, I made a decision for myself to start helping and become a volunteer. But that’s a whole another story…
